40 Years of Building, Improving and Serving
Building Materials Do It Center is celebrating an extraordinary milestone: 40 years of unwavering service to the Turks and Caicos Islands. The company, a cornerstone of the local home improvement and construction industry, officially launched its year-long 40th-anniversary celebrations on November 14, 2024.
From humble beginnings in Grand Turk in 1984 to becoming a household name with two locations and over 200 employees, Building Materials Do It Center has grown into a symbol of quality, reliability, and community spirit. Owners Kenneth Adams Snr. and Evelyn Adams, reflecting on their journey, expressed profound gratitude for the company’s achievements.
“It’s unbelievable sometimes to me,” said Evelyn Adams as she reflects on their growth. Kenneth recalls he and his wife personally going to Miami to buy screws and nails to sell to their community all those years ago and assures us that they are still committed to serving the people with excellence. The company has engrained themselves in the minds and hearts of the people of Turks and Caicos through quality products as well as being a pillar of support in their philanthropic endeavors.
The anniversary festivities began on November 14, 2024, with a Vendors and Contractor’s Cocktail. This event focused on their international vendors who have helped keep their shelves stocked and the local contractors who have been some of their biggest support as customers. The keynote speaker of the event, Dan Starr, President & CEO of Do It Best Corp, described the Adams family as “…visionaries who saw a need for a reliable home improvement supplier.” The evening went on with speeches, laughs, cheers and an opportunity to mingle. Emotions rode high when the night ended with a stunning fireworks display as Kenneth made the official 40th anniversary declaration.
Over the decades, Building Materials Do It Center has not only provided top-tier products but also fostered growth and development among its employees. Veronica Palmer, Furniture Department Supervisor, reminisces on her start as a cashier and how management saw potential in her even when she didn’t see it herself. Denard Mighty, Supervisor and Chaplain for Do It Center, said, “There are great opportunities here for any young person who wants to put their head down and work hard”. CEO of Olympic Construction Ltd, who was an employee at Do It Center for 17 years, gave credit, saying, “It was the experience of being with the company that propelled me into starting my own business.”
Kenneth Adams when looking back simply said, “From Grand Turk, Salt Cay to Provo in the west, we just want to say thank you so very much for patronizing our business, you have been our success.” Having built their business on their faith Evelyn Adams added, “I want to say thank you to God. He has been our strength; he’s been our encourager. He’s seen our tears, he’s seen our sweat but most of all he’s saw our hearts.”
Building Materials Do It Center promises to continue its year of celebration doing just as its 40th anniversary logo says, “…building, improving and serving.”
